StandAlone Q3 (saq3)

StandAlone Q3 is a modified version of the GPL release of Quake 3 allowing to run Quake 3 nods without the need of the official Quake 3 CD.
To run saq3 you need to launch the mod from the command line like that:
- for windows:
quake3.exe +set fs_name fname

- for linux
quake3 +set fs_name fname

Where fname is the folder name of the mod you want to run.

Known working mods are:
- World of Pandam(http://www.worldofpadman.com/ )
- Western Quake 3 ( http://www.westernquake3.net/ )


If most of the mods will run, some shaders and/or textures used by mods may be missing, displaying errors in the game window. When the game and maps are loaded missing textures/shaders are logged in the file "missing_shader-textures.log".

It has been reported that using the "pak0.pk3" file provided in Quake 3 Arena Demo( you need to create the folder "baseq3" in the software directory then copy pak0.pk3 in) may solve most of the shader/texture problems found in several mods and will allow bots to work.
In fact, any .pk3 file you have obtained legally can be added in baseq3 folder to complete missing textures or shaders. You must increment pak number every time you add a new one (pak0.pk3, pak1.pk3, pak2.pk3, etc... )

Id Software have released the source code to their classic game, Doom, under the GNU GPL. This means that the engine which powers Doom is Free Software. However, the game engine is only one component of a complete game.

The Doom engine uses an "IWAD" file to store all of its game data. This contains the raw data used by the game - the artwork, sound effects, levels, everything which defines Doom as a game. Until now, one of the original proprietary files was still needed in order to play Doom.

The Freedoom project aims at collaboratively creating a Free IWAD file. Combined with the Free source code, this results in a complete game based on the Doom engine which is Free Software.

Note:to run this I-wad(indipendent wad) u need a port of doom, there many around (for example legacy).
Freedoom is not yet complete(21 february 2007). As a result, some material is currently missing. For example, sounds may not play or graphics will be missing.

Nexuiz has been in development for close to 5 years by a team of amateur developers lead by Lee Vermeulen. It is a 3d deathmatch game made entirely over the internet. Alien Arena 2007 has been released for Windows and Linux on September 2, 2006, nearly one year after the 2006 version. My how much can change in one year! It's amazing how the community has grown, and helped shape the game into what it is today. It is safe to say, that AA2k7 barely resembles it's predecessor at all.

What is different? Well besides the upgrading of many textures, models, and effects, the engine has gotten a host of new features such as real time shadows, better dynamic lighting, shaders, new mutators, games modes, far too much to list here. CRX 6.0 is not only faster, smoother than before, it's also much more stable and secure. Most of all...it's the maps! With 37 in total, it's hard to believe that so many of the old maps have been discontinued.

Now with Galaxy 2.0 serving as a front end, players can feel more connected to the community than ever before, and track their own as well as other players stats with a click of the mouse! With a built in IRC client, users can chat with others, or stay abreast of latest tourney news, or get help if they have problems with the game.

Legends e' un misto tra Tribes e Quake. Grazie al Torque Engine il gioco riesce ad essere frenetico e nel contempo avere un buona grafica. Attualmente e' in fase di open beta. Da segnalare oltre al client Windows anche la versione Linux

War Rock e' un interessante fps multiplayer con elementi rpg, nonostante abbia un grafica obsoleta le texture e i modelli risultano gradevoli e su server hostati da giocatori con connessioni serie il gioco e' decisamente gradevole
Il gameplay ricorda per certi aspetti quello del piu blasonato(e a pagamento) battlefield 2, giravano voci che fosse una beta ma credo siano infondate, quindi siamo di fronte ad un full free game, al momento c'e' un disreto numero di mappe e ahime solo pochi veicoli ma in futuro verranno aggiunti gratuitamente altri veicoli e mappe.
Nota per gli utenti fastweb: essendo il gioco collegato a un server come avviene
negli mmo tradizionali anche gli utenti con questa connessione potranno hostare partite senza bisogno di dotarsi di ip pubblico. Non male per un gioco free, sicuramente merita una prova.
