Stratagus v2.2.4 and BosWars 2.5 (create 2d RTS)

Stratagus is a free cross-platform real-time strategy gaming engine. It includes support for playing over the internet/LAN, or playing a computer opponent. The engine is configurable and can be used to create games with a wide-range of features specific to your needs. Visit the Author site for a list of current games using the Stratagus engine. Development on Stratagus has permanently halted (06-10-2007). The Stratagus developers are now working on Bos Wars. Bos Wars uses its own modified version of the Stratagus engine.

Bos Wars is a futuristic real time strategy game (RTS). In a RTS game, the player has to combat his enemies while developing his war economy. Everything runs in real-time, as opposed to turn-based games where the player always has to wait for his turn. The trick is to balance the effort put into building his economy and building an army to defend and attack the enemies.

Bos Wars has a dynamic rate based economy. Energy is produced by power plants and magma gets pumped from hot spots. Buildings and mobile units are also built at a continuous rate. Control of larger parts of the map creates the potential to increase your economy throughput. Holding key points like roads and passages allow for different strategies.

It is possible to play against human opponents over LAN, internet, or against the computer. Bos Wars successfully runs under Linux, MS Windows, BSD, and Mac OS X.

Bos Wars aims to create a completely original and fun open source RTS game.

Hephaestus – RPG Maker (java)

posted in GAMEMAKER, LINUX, MAC | 1 Comment

Hephaestus is a freeware computer role-playing game construction kit (often called an “RPG maker”). A map editor is included, and scripting is done in the Java programming language. Hephaestus is written in Java, and therefore runs on every platform.

You’ve wanted to make your own computer role-playing game all your life. Hephaestus 2 makes it easier than ever to make any adventure you can imagine. Use your own art and sounds, or use the standard libraries. Make “static” maps with the map editor, or create your maps entirely with code – even making mazes and dungeons that are different every time you play. There’s never been a better time to start writing your own CRPG!

Hephaestus 2 now includes the post-holocaust horror adventure, Umbra! After the Great Old Ones return to reclaim the Earth, the few survivors cower in towns hidden in the wilderness, or have given themselves over to madness and worship of inhuman gods. You start out alone and helpless, but can rise to strike back, and perhaps return Earth to humanity!

Being in Java this works under linux and mac too.

C4 Engine (windows and macintosh not free)

The C4 Engine is one of the most technologically advanced 3D game engines available today for the Windows and MacOS X platforms. Its architecture is the product of many years of careful and clean design led by computer graphics author Eric Lengyel, making it one of the easiest and trouble-free engines to program.

The C4 Engine contains a comprehensive suite of robustly implemented game programming tools. Not only is it a powerhouse of a graphics engine, but it also includes integrated support for sound, music, networking, input devices, resource management, and much more. See the features page for details, or head over to the download page to see the demo in action.

The engine is reasonably priced for independent developers at $50 (US) per programmer, and the source code for the engine, demo game, and all tools are included with the license. Educational site licenses are also available to institutions who wish to use C4 as a teaching tool. (See the Licensing page.)

C4 continues to evolve at a fast pace, with new releases being made approximately once per month. All licensees get free updates to the entire engine forever. There are no renewal fees, subscriptions, or additional fees for add-on packs.

Tweebox v2.0 (Create your own interactive stories)

Tweebox

Create your own interactive stories with Tweebox.
You don’t need any programming skills to put together a story.
Stories you create with Tweebox can be used however you’d like. Because the final output is a single, small Web page, you can easily email a story to friends, post it on your Web site, or even distribute it on a CD-ROM. (You could use a floppy disk just as easily — stories take up that little space.) You can also use your stories for commercial purposes without restriction.
